We often help customers transform their garage door openings by removing central pillars, which aren’t always the most practical design. This was the case when we helped a local customer in Tisbury, Wiltshire. With the garage door entrances too narrow, we came up with a solution and installed a brand new, stylish Hormann sectional garage door, with automation included in the project too.
Brief
The two existing garage door openings were too narrow to comfortably accommodate even an average size vehicle and therefore Mr Selby was looking at the options of increasing drive-through width. Over the years, cars have got much bigger which means central pillars are troublesome. For those who like to keep their vehicles locked securely in a garage, an alteration means they can do so with ease. This type of work does require the input of specialists, such as our team, to make sure the job is done to a top-quality standard.
Solution
After discussing a few options, Mr Selby decided that he was in favour of having the central pillar removed. We obtained the structural calculations and with details confirmed we set about replacing the two single lintels with one single steel beam and then installed the double garage door.
As with many large openings the sectional type garage door was the most suitable solution with the double steel skin panels with rigid foam core providing strength over such a wide span. The garage door was fully remote automated for convenience, but we would always recommend automating a door of such size. Building control was technically not required for this project but we were happy to arrange this for the customers' peace of mind.
